The idea was to combine two contrasting elements, the natural world and urban landscape, into a single image to represent what Vancouver means to me. Drawing the distinctive outline of the local mountains as a backdrop I then created a forest in the foreground in such a way that it also resembles a bar code - a very familiar symbol of urban life.
I added a beaver and woodpecker to symbolise the idea of "being at home" and created the design with clean crisp lines and limited colour palette to both symbolise the relative youth of the city and its dynamism. I wanted to put a twist to the familiar theme of trees and mountains and also like to try and incorporate wit into my artwork where possible...
